Genetics – The Pull-Push Theory

“We are all equal”

Well I’m sorry to be the one to break it to you but we’re not. Not in this game. We are all very different. Our genetics play a massive role in the kind of results we’re going to get from every aspect of our training and nutrition.

I’ve seen people get really ripped after 3 months of casual training and I’ve seen people who train their socks off for years and get next to nowhere.

As with all things in life, some people will find obtaining certain goals harder then others, some will find obtaining certain goals easy.
Mr X might find building muscle easy as cake but find keep away the fat really difficult.
Mr Y might be amazing at staying lean and fat free but find it almost impossible to add muscle tissue to his frame.
Mr Z on the other hand might be good at adding muscle tissue and awesome at keeping off body fat.

The Pull-Push Theory

Mr X wants to add 14lbs of solid muscle then lose 14lbs of fat. He’ll find putting that muscle on easier then stealing candy from a baby. His genetics are pushing him forward helping him progress on his quest. When it comes to lose the fat he’s going to find it harder then moon walking backwards up Everest. His genetics will try and pull him away from his goal.
The point is that no matter what your goal, you’re either going to be pushed forwards or pulled backwards by your genetics. Are you tough enough to fight the pull?

Beat the Pull

So how does Mr X lose that pesky 14lbs of body fat that’s getting in the way of his 6 pack shining through?

Simple. If your genetics are pulling you away from your goal you’d better make sure you pull against it with more force. I’m taking about educating yourself on nutrition and training, designing the perfect workout program to match your genetics and eating a perfect diet. The more aspects of training and nutrition you get right, the betted armed you are to beat the pull by your genetics and the more likely it is you’ll get to your goal.

Evolve, Evolve, Evolve

As with the animal kingdom, the most successful individuals are those who are able to adapt to change. In this case its most likely a change in the rate of progression or even regression. When things aren’t going to plan you must evolve to survive.
I’ve been training for about 6 years. Apart from when I was getting those amazing newbie gains,  I’ve only been getting the results I’ve truly wanted within the last 6 months. Why is this? For years I’ve been known by my friends as someone that does incredibly hard workouts. Yes I’ve been working out harder then the vast majority of fitness fanatics but these workouts have not been tailored to fit my genetics. It’s only over the last half year that I’ve realised the importance of adapting your training to match your goal and assist my genetic push to overcome my genetic pull.

It was getting to the point where I was starting to think I’d never get to where I wanted to be. Now I realise anything is possible. But you have to do what it takes.

You have to plan out your workout routine, plan your diet, record all workouts, record every meal you eat, analyse the results AND THEN evolve it all. Make it better. Repeat.
Sometimes even this isn’t good enough. You have to do more. You have to find another gear and increase the amount of effort you give. Every session try and focus on working harder than the time before. Think about your goals, how badly you want to succeed, what it means if you fail, what it takes to be a winner.

You have to do what it takes to get what you want.

Step it up.
