How to build powerful defences against the common cold and flu season!

There are over two hundred viruses which cause the common cold.  Three strains main one's which cause influenza (flu).  All can be contaigous to a  lesser or greater extent depending on the strain. Some causing mutations creating different re-infections of a similar virus. The winter seasonal flu virus kills between 600 each year in the UK and up to 13,000 during an epidemic. Antibiotics have no effect against  viral infections and anti-viral drugs are worthless for mutations in the strain.

It is important to know what is available to help reduce the risks of catching the virus and how you can help your body recover. In this article we examine some solutions to build your immunity.

How are viruses spread from person to person?

When someone sneezes or coughs into their hands and they touch a surface, e.g. a telephone, a computer keyboard, a door handle, money, clothing, etc. the virus stays active for up to 24 hours.  When somone else touches a contaminated object,  and subsqueatly touches thier nose, eyes or mouth, they can become infected. When someone sneezes or coughs into the air, millions of tiny droplets cover an area of up to 1 meter (3 foot), staying suspended in the air for a period of time before dropping onto a contaminated object which people may touch.  The time the droplets stay airborne depends on humidity which is why these droplets can stay suspended longer during the winter months.

Maintaining a strong immune system through good nutrition,including supplementation is important for all ages.  Boosting the immune system through supplementation is a good approach and it is beyond the scope of this article.
